Harold H. "Hal" Smith served as president of Pikeville College for 12 years, 1997 – 2009.  Upon retirement in May 2009, he was named president emeritus.  A native of northern Kentucky, Smith graduated from Centre College in 1964 and has an MBA from American University in Washington, DC.  During a 19-year term at Centre College, he served as dean of admissions, lecturer in economics/management and vice president/dean of students.  He served for 14 years as vice president for advancement/ development at Muskingum College in Ohio.  Currently he is president of the Governor’s Scholars Program Foundation in Kentucky.

Smith’s 45-year career in higher education administration includes nearly 30 years, directly or indirectly, with institutional advancement and development. His interests professionally and personally, have been wide and varied.  He has been involved with, and has held leadership positions in, a significant number of charitable, civic and educational organizations.  He was first listed in "Who’s Who in America” in 2000.  Hal joined Global Advancement in 2010 and has provided counsel on numerous projects.
